Olivia lies in bed in the morning. Sunlight streams through the window. Her alarm goes off at 6 a.m., she wakes up to see some sort of energy distortion over her bed. She leaps out of bed and grabs her gun, but it disappears. Then it's it's 5:59 and her alarm goes off at 6 a.m. again.
In the lab, Walter performs an experiment using dozens of cameras. Olivia joins them and Walter temporarily forgets that she works there. He has 28 cameras set up to capture the "apparition" that's haunting them, which he thinks might be out of phase with their reality, which is why only Walter can see him. He got the idea from "The Matrix".
Olivia tells them about the energy hovering over her bed. It made a droning noise and was powerful, all the metal objects gathered in a pile on the floor. It touched her. She shows Walter a burn on her arm. She wonders if she's causing lit, like when she was a child and set fire to the room. Walter hangs up her coat and sees a letter from his shrink, which recommends he return to the mental hospital. Olivia has yet to sign off on it.
Astrid and Olivia take readings of metal from Olivia's house. The items in her bedroom are magnetized. On a screen in his lab, Walter hears Olivia yells for Astrid from her bathroom.
Nothing is happening at the apartment. Then seconds later, the same scene he just saw on the monitor plays out. The bathroom door shuts Olivia in, the energy appears, metal objects are attracted, then it disappears.
Back in the lab, they wonder how Walter's equipment recorded the event before it occurred. He's seen something similar when he and William Bell did the cortexaphan trials, with a boy who could do astral projection. Every time he did it, it attracted metal objects.
He suggests the boy may be trying to reach out to Olivia. Some of the children didn't handle the treatments as well as she did. The boy was Subject 9.
At Massive Dynamic, Nina Sharps talks about nanotechnology, saying they don't have to worry about the risks.
Walter rants at Nina over Astrid's earpiece about the fact that some Cortexaphan trial records were destroyed. Astrid and Olivia go through the records and find Cameron James.
They return to the lab with the records. Walter is prepared to go visit him with Olivia, even though he hasn't left the lab in three years. He packed sandwiches.
Out on the street in New York, Walter struggles with sensory overload and acts like he enjoys being out.
They go to Cameron's apartment. No one answers, so Olivia picks the lock. The mail inside is addressed to Mark Little, but Walter thinks they're in the right place because there's no metal anywhere. A neighbor stops by and tells them Mark drives a supply truck back and forth to Maine. She says he'll be back tomorrow morning by 10 a.m.
Olivia checks Walter into a hotel, where he worries about germs everywhere. She has the adjoining room. Once she's in there, she hears banging from Walter's room. He's ranting and throwing furniture around, freaking out about all the germs. She yells at him to get his attention and tells him it's all in his mind. He dug his nails so far into his palms that he bled.
Olivia bandages him up. He talks about his wife Elizabeth and mentions she committed suicide after Peter died. Olivia suggests they go out for a root beer float.
In a diner, he shows her the proper drinking technique. He asks about the letter from St. Claire's. He expected to get sent back and says he knows they're not family, he just works for her. She sees that's why he left the lab, to prove he's capable.
Whatever she decides, she's only trying to do what's best, she says. "What's best for whom, Agent Dunham?" he asks.
They notice their spoons start to get drawn off the table. People leap up from their chairs as a field of energy appears in the diner, expanding to nearly fill it. The front window breaks and Olivia goes into the street, where she's nearly hit by a car. Then, suddenly, the energy disappears.
In the morning, she takes the case from NYPD and Lt Daniels. Walter is shaken. He thinks it happened because of the trials he ran.
They go back to Cameron James' apartment. The cortexaphan doses were so low their abilities only lasted 24 hours. Olivia thinks Cameron's doing it on purpose. She goes into the building alone. Walter asks for her phone and waits outside.
Upstairs, Olivia introduces herself to "Mark Little." As soon as she says "Cameron James" he runs. Downstairs, he crashes into Walter, who's waiting for the elevator. He's scared as soon as he sees Walter.
He recognizes Olivia and is surprised she's OK. He calls Walter "Dr. Freak" and says all he has are side effects with no ability. Anytime he has anxiety, he sends metal flying. He changed his name because Cameron was his father's name. His father signed him up for the trial and then took the money they got for participating to buy drugs.
He asks Walter if he can understand what it feels like to be a freak. Walter can.
As they're standing there, the ball of energy appears in the hallway and starts coming at them. Cameron says he has nothing to do with it and yells at it to stop. It disappears.
He stopped it. But if Cameron's not doing it, what is?
Walter suggests the electromagnetism could be a side effect of distortions in time. He worries it'll keep growing until it's stopped. A large field of energy should neutralize it. Walter thinks Cameron can do it.
He reminds Cameron that he blew up a toaster with his mind as a child simply because of an irrational hatred of raisin toast.
They head to a power grid terminal. Walter suggests the energy is attacking Olivia, so they'll wait for it and Cameron will use his energy with the grid to destroy it.
As they wait, Cameron asks about the other trial kids. Olivia doesn't know any. She says she never had any side effects. He suggests that when he had his first experience, he thought something was coming after him, until he realized he was doing it to himself. He wonders if Walter would tell Olivia if he thought she was.
Walter notices chains creeping across the ground. Olivia says she isn't doing it. Walter yells at Cameron to disperse the energy. He's concentrating on it when it coalesces in front of Olivia. It forms the outline of Peter. She recognizes him and tells Cameron to stop. He's concentrating so hard, he continues. Olivia takes out her gun and fires it into the air. The energy disappears.
A naked Peter pops up from under the surface of Reiden Lake. An Observer watches.
Back at the power grid, Olivia tells Walter what she saw. She had a feeling he wanted her help.
Walter thinks she behaved irrationally, based only on intuition. He points out when he does that, people say he's crazy. He's learned crazy is a lot more complicated than people think.
Broyles calls. A father and son just pulled a man from Reiden Lake. He knows a lot of classified information and claims to know all of them.
Olivia, Walter and Broyles go to the hospital. Peter's asking for Olivia. Walter waits in the hall and sees Olivia has signed the St. Claire's form. He takes it out and sees that she has checked "I DO NOT recommend hospitalization."
Olivia visits Peter. She doesn't know who he is.
