(warning! contains spoilers)

A police convoy brings Peter to see Broyles. They take him to interrogation.

Olivia arrives at Walter's lab and finds Walter unconscious in a surgical chair. He's doping himself so he can sleep. He's irritated no one will let him see Peter after he's been dreaming about him and seeing him for weeks. Olivia explains that Peter is refusing to talk to anyone but Walter, and is claiming he's his son.

Hillsdale, New York A man comes home from work and finds his wife rifling through their stuff. She's wearing a sweater she said she hated. She sees the keys on his waist and distracts him by offering to make dinner. She has to stop her hands from shaking. She hears him in the shower and gets his keys. She's opening his safe when he finds her. He notices her face looks weird. It's translucent. He runs and trips, then sees his wife's body under his bed. The woman asks him where his files are. She changes shape in front of him and looks like an Asian woman. She asks him again about the files, then puts her finger through his eye.

At the federal holding facility, Broyles tells Walter a DNA sample confirmed Peter is related to Walter. Walter thinks he's another Peter from a third universe.

Broyles wants to know how Peter wants to know everything he does.

Walter goes in to see Peter. Everyone else watches from the observation room. Peter realizes that Walter doesn't know who he is. He tells him Walter is the only one who can figure out why no one remembers him. Peter tells him about the two universes and that one is dying. He tells Walter about the machine he built between them and Peter was the power source.

Walter says there's a machine but he didn't build it. Peter reminds him about his son dying and Walter crossing over to save the other.

Walter remembers bringing the other boy back, but they drowned in Reiden Lake. Peter realizes the Observer didn't save him. He was supposed to die but didn't and became a paradox between the two worlds, so for them to heal he had to be deleted. Peter thinks something's gone wrong and that's how he's back.

Walter freaks out and leaves.

Lincoln calls Olivia to Hillsdale. Dr. Malcom Truss worked in the research department of Massive Dynamic in their biotech department, but he left the company ten years ago. He's dead, and shows signs of torture. But the dead man has grease under his fingernails -- he's not Dr. Truss, he's the wife's boyfriend. They still can't find Truss.

Eden, Vermont A man tends to his garden but he's interrupted by the shape shifter, wielding a gun.

At Massive Dynamic, Lincoln sees a photo of Olivia on her desk. Olivia explains that Nina took her and her sister in after their mother died. Olivia mentions Truss. He left in 2001. Olivia tells him they think a shape shifter kidnapped him.

Nina tells them Truss was working on a cellular replication project, copying healthy cells of a patient to replace the damaged ones. William shut the project down over ethical concerns. It was based on copying human tissue, like shape shifting.

Truss drives down the road with the shape shifter, who's still holding a gun on him. She tells him there are people who support his work and want him to keep at it and will pay him. Nadine tells him she had stage 4 cancer when she received the treatment. It cured the cancer, but the cells aren't stable so she's still dying. He says there are no files, it's all in his head. But he'll help.

Peter works on rewiring his holding cell.

Olivia catches Broyles up on Truss' work. Peter listens in from his cell. He offers that the discs they found are memory discs and he's seen them before. They confront him about it. He doesn't know about the prototype hybrids, but tells them about the disc tech. Lincoln suggests letting Peter examine the discs.

Peter apologizes for upsetting Walter, but points out they still need his help.

Walter goes through Peter's old things from childhood.

Rutland, Vermont.

Truss and Nadine stop for gas. She has a nose bleed. She mentions her daughter and he says he didn't have kids with his wife Karen. He hopes to be a part of her life again. He assures her he's not going anywhere and she goes to deal with her nose bleed.

A state trooper pulls up and calls in the plate. He's ordered to wait for back-up, but he turns around and runs into Nadine. Truss pays for gas and comes back to the car.

They drive off and we see the dead trooper under his car.

Peter works on the shape shifter device. Olivia admits to being unnerved that Peter, the man from her dreams, is there.

They get word about the trooper. They watch the footage and see Truss cooperating. They think he doesn't know he's working with a shape shifter.

Nadine takes Truss to the lab her people built. He gets to work. He examines a small slice of her skin. He thinks it's a miracle it worked. Truss wishes William Bell could see it. He's still irritated William shut the project down. He gets results from her skin and announces her genome isn't propagating properly through the new tissue. He says he can fix it.

Nina pays Walter a visit in the lab. He brushes Peter off as a scientific anomaly, but he's in the middle of making Peter's favorite dessert, custard. Walter has hated her since the night Peter died, he blames her. He thinks she was right that he was wrong to try to save Peter and he's been punished ever since.

Nina thinks maybe he's suffered enough and Peter's arrival is a second chance.

Peter shows Broyles a DNA sequence he found on the shape shifter memory tech. He found six. The new models can take on the form of any of their victims, and change down to the molecular level. If they perfect it, they'll be completely indistinguishable from the people they're imitating. The only way to know will be to cut them open and find the memory disc.

Truss injects Nadine with something. Her skin starts changing, looking translucent. Suddenly, she shifts and looks like Truss' wife, Karen, which understandably freaks him out. He tries to run, but she grabs him.

Peter has another breakthrough on his research and summons Broyles. The disc is broadcasting a signal, but he needs a bigger computer to break the encryption. They let Peter into the HQ room. The computer cycles through the code and gets coordinates. They have a location for the shapshifter.

Nadine looks like herself again and tries to calm Truss down. She tells him his work created her and progress comes with sacrifice. She tells him again she's offering him the opportunity to continue the work that William Bell took from him.

He thinks about it and suggests a solution. But she catches him trying something that could kill her and crushes a vial in his hand. She tells him to start again.

Olivia and the Fringers reach the warehouse lab. Nadine confronts them and fires. Truss takes the vial he was working on and tries to run, but Nadine intercepts him and takes it. She takes off running. She does some cool Spiderman wall-scaling and heads for the roof. Olivia goes up and finds two FBI agents already shot. One is dead, but Agent Warrick is hanging in. He tells Olivia that Nadine jumped into the water.

Later, paramedics take Agent Warrick to the hospital. Olivia talks to Truss. Olivia confirms his fear that his wife is dead. Truss remembers William's caution that "some things are not ours to tamper with" and understands it now.

The dive teams pull a body from the water. It's Agent Warrick. Olivia calls in a report on the ambulance.

A lone trooper finds it on the side of the road. The driver is dead and the back is trashed but empty.

At Fringe HQ, an agent hands some paperwork to Olivi. Olivia tries to reassure Lincoln that they'll find the shape shifter. He leaves and the same agent brings Olivia the same paperwork as moments before. It's not where she just put it.

Walter visits Peter. Peter tells him he knows what he's capable of, and that he needs his help. Walter takes Peter's face in his hands and tells him he's tried for 25 years to imagine what his son would look like as a man. Walter thinks Peter was sent to tempt him, to see if he would repeat the mistakes of the past. Walter says he can't help him. He says tried to help a version of his son 25 years ago, but that boy wasn't his son. And neither is Peter.

Walter leaves.

Boston, Mass. Nadine steps into a storage closet and injects herself with Truss' serum to fight her changing skin. She retrieves a type-writer to submit a status report. She found Truss and the serum was synthesized successfully. "It worked," she types.

The typewriter responds: "Understood. Begin preparations. We're sending the others."
